Toshiba Satellite L635-S3020 LED TruBrite 13.3-Inch Laptop (Grey/Black) Review

I used to have a much older model Toshiba Satellite (Cannot remember the model number off the top of my head). I later gave it to my nephew and purchased an Acer Apire One, which after about a year of use (gentle use at that) it ceased to function at all. The time then came for me to shop around and with me not being much of a Mac person, I settled on this laptop after looking at other brands all over.

I am very pleased with the construction and performance of this laptop. The battery life I find is adequate (I do web surfing, reports, and photo editing), all which lasts me roughly at least 4.5-5 hours. The Eco-friendly feature is very intuitive since it saves battery life dramatically when you turn this on. Screen is very easy to read, keyboard is good enough to use.

My only slight complaint is the speakers, they aren't the best, however they are not bad by any means, a tad quiet if you will. However if you plug in headphones in (I have headphones that cover over your entire ear), and voila, the Dolby Advanced Audio really kicks in!

I do recommend this laptop, it's not too heavy, and it is very well rounded. I've owned it for about a week thus far and have absolutely no regrets purchasing it.

Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q720 17.0-Inch Laptop Review

Normally, aesthetics are a secondary part of a notebook review, but Toshiba forces the issue with the Qosmio X305's wild design. Seriously, the lid's audacious three-tone, metallic-red paint job alone is enough to challenge the interest of a potential buyer, but the X305 also sports an unusual formfactor involving curves and lips that add to both the machine's footprint and height. And like the majority of notebooks in its class, the 17-inch X305 is heavy--although, with a carry weight of approximately 11 and a half pounds, it's still more than a pound lighter than the CyberPower Extreme M1 we reviewed last month.

Of course, there's more to the Toshiba X305 than its physical spectacle. The machine has the distinction of housing a 2GHz Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 processor, making it only the second quad notebook we've reviewed--the first was Lenovo's Kick Ass ThinkPad W700. Those two extra cores gave the X305 a healthy advantage over its higher-clocked, dual-core competitors in our application benchmarks. In Premiere Pro CS3, ProShow Producer, and MainConcept Reference, which are all heavily multithreaded, the X305 surpassed all the dual-core rigs we've reviewed over the last several months--including the 2.8GHz HP HDX 18 we reviewed in January--by greater than 50 percent, in most cases. Interestingly, it also scored much better than those machines in Photoshop, which isn't heavily multithreaded. We attribute it more to the X305's hard drive configuration: a speedy Toshiba 64GB SSD is dedicated to the OS, while applications write to a virtually empty 320GB HDD.

With its crazy bright-red coloring and curvaceous design, the X305 will likely repel conservative types.

In gaming, the X305 is not as impressive. The machine had no problem pummeling our GeForce Go 8600M-equipped zero-point rig in the game benchmarks, but it was no match for the dual ATI Radeon HD 3870 cards in last month's CyberPower Extreme M1. The X305 suffered a 12 percent loss against that rig in Quake 4 and more punishing losses of 52 percent and 41 percent in UT3 and Crysis, respectively. The X305 also fared worse than old-fave Gateway P-7811 FX, with its GeForce 9800M GTS; the X305's 9800M GTX runs 100MHz slower (500MHz vs. 600MHz), making for a six percent disadvantage in Quake 4 and a 26 percent loss in UT3. The X305 managed a 10 percent win against the Gateway in Crysis, thanks to its shader-core advantage (112 vs. 64), but it's a bittersweet victory as neither rig is capable of playable frame rates in that game at high settings, even at 1024x768 resolution.

Toshiba positions the Qosmio as a multi-purpose entertainment machine. To that end, the X305 sports good audio capabilities--the 4.1 Harman/Kardon speakers get plenty loud and maintain good midrange. The glossy surface on the 17-inch screen adds vibrancy to both movies and games. (Interestingly, the screen's native resolution is 1680x1050, while most other notebooks of this size are 1920x1200.) An HDMI port lets you connect to a high-def display. Plus, the X305 offers three USB ports (one of which doubles as eSATA), a 5-in-1media reader, and an ExpressCard slot, along with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

While the X305's application performance is certainly commendable, its outrageous looks, lackluster gaming performance, and paltry battery life (one hour, eight minutes on power-saving mode) should consider its cons before making a purchase.

It's a very good computer. It is or seems very slow at first. Once I Installed Google Chrome everything was faster. The webcam works very well and has no problems whatsoever. The touch screen is very accurate.

The screen IS multi-touch as well as the trackpad.

And finally, The laptop has a nice finish to it with the texture and look of it.

Tip: It isn't mentioned anywhere, but if you want to right click with the touch screen fast, tap and hold the place where you want it to right click and tap with another finger somewhere else. Don't let go of the first finger until you can see that it has right clicked.

(When I say tap and hold that means you touch the screen and leave it there. And when I just say tap that only means To touch the screen and let go.)

My wife received a Toshiba Satellite laptop as a hand-me-down gift a few years ago. This laptop is now about eight years old and wearing out, so for her birthday this year I researched economically priced laptops and was very pleased one of her best options turned out to be this Toshiba Satellite (L675D-S7014, to be exact).

I located this laptop new for a really low price that just crested the 0 mark. I was unable to locate a new laptop with 17.3" monitor, dual core, and 4Gb of memory for this price. Needless to say, I snapped it up and gave it to her for her birthday.

She squealed with delight when she opened it! She immediately took it out of the box and admired its beauty. It looks modern and sleek and while it's actually a large computer, it's not overly heavy. Her old 17" square-monitor laptop was at least 15 lbs. This 17.3" is under 10 lbs. In the past she would never use the laptop on her lap on our couch. It was just too heavy and hot. Now she does. The bottom of the laptop never gets past being warm and the laptop itself is very light compared to her old one.

Setup was as simple as turning on the laptop and walking through some questions. Upon its first power on, it installed and activated the OS build with only a few questions. Windows 7 is so simple to get started, but if you have a wireless LAN setup, make sure you have the wireless activation key. Windows will ask for this when installing the OS. Within maybe 10 minutes after power up she was on our wireless network Facebooking, e-mailing, and so happily working away. I couldn't be happier with this laptop.

Really the only improvement I would suggest would be the sound quality of the speakers, but this is a nit. Really, for the price, this is a great laptop. The sound is in stereo with ample volume, but it's a little tinny. I really have no reason to complain. It's such a nice laptop, speedy, and has just the right amount of memory for everything she does. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a low-priced, new laptop at a budget price.

In fact, I'm looking at one of the 18.4" Toshiba laptops for myself. I'm so impressed with this one and the robust performance of her last Toshiba Satellite, which lasted eight years, I think I'll get myself a Toshiba when I'm ready to retire my current Lenovo. For the price, you gotta love it!

Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934 Laptop Notebook Review

One of the usb ports broke after a month of having it and I've had a couple of other problems with the lcd screen but I have managed to get it to work again.
It works great now. I'm pretty sure my large dog stepped on the laptop while it was on the floor and broke the back light so that's not the laptop's fault. If the backlight ever goes on your laptop, get a whole new lcd screen (you can find some reasonably priced ones at [...]) instead of fixing\replacing the back light because it's a lot cheaper.
I'm all in all happy with this laptop. It works rather well and the wireless set up is pretty simple once you understand the general necessaties of setting up a wireless network. It usually just pops right online with no problems once I understood everything I had to do to make it a secure wireless set up and learned how to save my settings.
I hooked this up to my large lcd screen tv and with a digital adapter and the right cables, it works beautifully. The tv receives a wonderful picture from it and it's a pretty good quality I really didn't expect. I hook it up through the vga port. I wish the vga port had screw holes though. It's kind of lame of laptop manufacturers to put in vga ports with out the screw holes. I don't know why they do that but it makes the connection through the vga port rather fragile because one little pull from the cable or laptop and it disconnects which can be a pain in the butt. So I cannot move the laptop around as it's connected to the vga cable.

My laptop came with Vista and it's okay, I like XP better though.

I've had the laptop for about 2 years now and all in all I'm happy with it. For the price it's been a good deal.

I have used a Toshiba Portege M300. Very happy with it. Now i got this Satellite U505 S2010 touch screen. Its PERFECT!!! Its not dim as the other reviews stated, just right! Everything works out fine. No critical complaints! Only if you like to play games the video card could have been better as the other 13.3 inch toshiba then you'll have to give up the touch screen. Would recomend this laptop. Value for your money too!!!

Toshiba Satellite T135-S1305 TruBrite 13.3" Ultrathin Laptop (Black) Review

This has all the bells and whistles anyone could want, but comes with one tiny flaw, one small flaw, and one major flaw. You can fix the major flaw. The tiny flaw is that the screen is very shiny; get used to looking at yourself if you aim the screen right at you. The small flaw is the keyboard; it is, technically, full size, 11" wide; but the keyboard is flat from front to back, so this machine begs to have a bar put along the back to lift it a quarter inch or so (which wouldn't hurt ventilation); also, the keys are very close together, only about 1/4 of the normal spacing apart, and this makes it easy for thick-fingered typists to hit a wrong key. The major flaw is the sound; the T135 comes with a Conexant sound driver that puts out almost no volume. I'm talking, put your ear a couple of inches from the speaker, and have everyone around you stop talking. Completely unacceptable. The fix is easy: uninstall the Conexant sound driver. Then the machine will automatically install the default driver, and you will get volume you can actually hear; not concert hall, just a small portable radio sound, but plenty for casual listening. Using the headphone jack to feed a stereo system gives great results. The touchpad is nowhere near as useable as a bluetooth mouse, but that's to be expected in a tiny machine. The battery life is great, over 9 hours, and that alone is enough to make this machine an obvious choice. If you didn't have to uninstall the Conexant sound driver to make the machine work right, I'd give it a 5. As it comes from the factory, a 4.

I currently am a Systems Administrator for a fairly large corporation, I have been a Network Administrator, an IT Manager and IT Project Manager. I have dealt with hundreds of Desktop and Laptop products ranging in brands from HP to Dell to Lenovo(IBM) and from Intel to AMD. I have to say that I am extremely impressed with this product.

The processor literally screams it's so fast, the screen is incredibly, I watched a blu-ray on it already and was quite impressed. It is large, and it is quite heavy, but I knew that going into the purchase. The reason I chose such a large and heavy system is because I did need something portable, but I also needed something that would serve in the desktop capacity as well. It has thoroughly met my expectations and exceeded them.

My only honest complaint is that it is a fingerprint magnet...if that's my only complaint what am I complaining about again....?????

Our situation was which laptop to buy in a market that treats laptops and most computer equipment as a commodity now instead of a unique product. For us, buying a computer for our daughter who is going away to school and considering that she is not too computer savvy, we wanted a basic machine that would not require a lot of hand holding since she will be away at school. I have always admired Toshibas but never overcame my preference for Gateway computers to buy one. Well, Gateway is not much of a company now, nothing like the old cow-styled packaging and personalized service of just a few short years ago and I am sitting with purchased warranties that are worthless now on 5 other computers. So it was time for a switch! This computer has worked out great and hats off to Microsoft with Windows 7. I am anxious to use that operating system on other computers now that I had the chance to use it on this laptop. I would have preferred that they offered Windows 7 in a professional version also but all they offer is the home edition (another problem in the current realm of buying a computer - you get what they offer you instead of going custom). It will take very little effort to set up this computer for wireless operation or wired. Email accounts were easy to create and set up. I already had Office 2003 and Office 2007 upgrade at home so I did not need to purchase additional software for the machine. It works very well with Office 2007.

Other reviews talked about the finger prints on the outside due to the gloss finish. I don't have a problem with that and if it doesn't bother you, don't let it bother you when you make your decision. If this is a problem, just have a rag handy to wipe it down or look for another computer. Also, other reviews talk about the keyboard and how it is perhaps difficult to use. We find it just like learning another new keyboard when you buy a new computer. It is something you will get used to. Note that the key pads themselves are rather flat compared to others that are contoured. Another pickyune comment would be that the power plug is a straight plug in as opposed to a right-angle plug. Let's see how this will work as I am concerned that this could be a problem if not monitored closely when moving/using the laptop.

All in all this is a great basic machine for someone who is not very computer literate but needs a good value laptop for college!

Since my own experience with Toshiba was so positive once I had decided to stick with the brand I knew, it was a matter of which one. My reason for buying a new one was that I'd had my Toshiba Satellite since 2003 or 2004 -- can't remember which and technology had definitely moved on. But that machine is still working, all be it slow.

Well, I have not regretted my decision at all. Many of the negatives reported by other reviews I have found not faults at all. The keyboard, for example is not too loud for me -- in fact it is perfect for my touch. One thing that does drive me nuts is the touchpad: when I am surfing it is so sensitive that it keeps scrolling down the page and back up again at what seems like warp speed. (I think somebody in the reviews may have found out how to fix this, so I much look and see if I can find it.)This machine boots up so fast -- quite an improvement that the 10 to 15 minutes it took my old machine!

Back to deciding which one to go with. Initially, I planned to go with a 15.6 inch screen -- mainly because that was what I was used to and also because there were some really good deals price-wise. However, I couldn't find one in the price range with 4 USB ports and I also wanted an HDMI port. It still amazes me what I can get for around 0 considering I paid 00 for my old and antiquated machine. The computer looks beautiful, but fingerprints are an annoying problem. Also it's lighter than my old laptop, which is a pleasant surprise.

I've had the machine since April 10th so I am still on a learning curve as how things work and what I can do. But so far it's all worked like magic. I've talked to my son on Skype and he lives in Korea. Some people have complained about the quality of the webcam and my son has told me on one occasion that the picture was not that great and then the next time that it was really clear! My son in Italy said it was great. So what can I tell you -- is it the Internet connection or is it the camera. I really like having it and it's worked seamlessly. And it's absolutely true that the wireless connection works right out of the box. I often download tv programs that I've missed and the quality of the picture is as if watching the tv. I should add that I'm American and had the machine delivered to my mother's, but I live in the UK and have been using it here since the end of April. No problems have arisen as a result of being in a different country.

I am going to have to replace a lot of software, which is an expensive negative. I've used Microsoft Office Professional 2000 for years and Adobe 5 and Paint Shop Pro 9 -- all will have to be replaced. However, I am experimenting with Open Office software which is free and so far has been great. Having said that I am using the trial version of Office Professional 2007 mostly because I really needed Outlook. So the question is will I just buy Outlook and go with Open Office.

I do like Windows 7, the software that comes with the computer has been adequate so far. I use the movie maker software a lot and was pleased that it could improve the quality of some of my little homemade videos -- the kind you can make with either a cell phone or digital camera. Also a nice little scanning/faxing program that has made it very easy for me to scan and email. I was able to make a DVD of some photographs for my husband, but was not able to figure out how to find/use the lable/flash program that I thought was part of the package -- the one that is supposed to print directly onto the disc.

Glad to say my old 2179 HP printer was no problem to install and works perfectly. I was sure I would have to get a new one so that was a nice surprise.

All in all, with 6 weeks ownership in hand I am thrilled with this laptop.

I got the toshiba L505-6946 - can't see on amazon - difference is that it has 2.0 mhz intel chip and no seperate graphics card. very happy with the machine, and having shopped around a lot, nothing near the price with same specs (Aug 09). I bought it partly based on my previous toshiba and this one has been good so far. toshiba generally adds some good software and functionality from the company. no issues at all, so can't comment on customer support. on the down side, laptop is about 6 pds - bit heavy but that's what you expect for this price and 16 inch, so depends on what you attach the most importance to. Screen has a really beautiful picture and clarity, which was my main concern. no speed issues even with vista, once i cleared all the muck out of the start-up.

main complaints (which is why i am writing this review, actually):
- speaker output really poor, especially if playing music/videos.
- microphone quality basically unusable.

so, if i want to use skype or decently watch videos/music, i need to carry good external headset, something i did not want to do. the sound output and mic on my work HP is much much better. this has a camera, but i don't really need it as much as sound. in fairness, maybe not enough to drop a star for, considering the price, but does irritate me enough to only give 4 star, since this was a key part of my buying decision over a compaq that i saw on special...

This was on sale so even though it would have been worth the full price. This is the laptop that I found to have the best price to weight ratio, because I needed something VERY light and I really wanted to stay away from getting a netbook. This has all the characteristics I was looking for: light, skype friendly (web-camera and built in microphone), long battery life, fast (lot of RAM). I was slightly concerned when I saw bad reviews and a lot of people complaining about the mouse pad, but i've been pleasantly surprised that I haven't had any problem with it. I figured I was going to get a wireless mouse anyways, but I've actually been converted and enjoy using the mouse-pad because i'm usually on the couch or bed with my laptop so an actual mouse wouldn't be that convenient. So I recommend this highly.

With its integrated Draft-N Wi-Fi networking capabilities, this laptop provides up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range using 802.11n-compatible routers as you would with 802.11g networks. New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar.
